“When I Think About Where I’m From, I Think Of You”
Five friends, three weddings and endless inappropriate jokes. Amongst unibrows, forbidden music and shared wax strips, five women exchange dreams whilst planning their lives together. Playful, intimate and surprisingly naughty, these girlfriends are completely unfiltered behind closed doors.
But as unrest in Iran grows, wedding songs are replaced by sirens and protests break out across the country. Futures become uncertain and friendship is threatened as hard choices and emigration pull them apart. The UK premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Sanaz Toossi’s Wish You Were Here, directed by Sepy Baghaei, charts a decade of sisterhood and platonic love with raw honesty and outrageous humour.
Through political upheaval and drastic change, can their bonds hold strong, or will best friends forever become friends long lost?
“Wish You Were Here” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. On behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk

Gateways programme
“What happens after the play
is the point of the play”
As part of our ongoing commitment to finding ways for theatre to have impact beyond the confines of a space and to engage with the context we make work with, we created Gateways. Gateways is a series of talks, commissions, and curated events that offer audiences opportunities to learn more about our work, our artists, and how our productions relate to the wider world.
Alongside ‘Wish You Were Here’, our Gateways offerings respond to the themes of the play, the politics of Iran and feminism and platform new writing from three Iranian female playwrights.
These include:
- Q&A with cast and creatives about the theatre-making process hosted by Creative Associate Atri Banerjee
- Pre-show playlets, a chance to experience flashes of brand new work commissioned around the production
- A collaboration with artists and companies. Independent artists and smaller companies supported by the Gate to present their work alongside our productions.
