Statement from Ellen & Lise
The Gate Theatre is a truly unique company, defying our size and our resources to create an ever-transforming space with a global outlook where audiences and artists sit at the heart of our work.
We are proud of the amazing community we are part of – both on our doorstep and just up the road in North Kensington. It’s one of the most diverse areas of London and we strive to continuously find new ways to work together, getting out of our building and into the community. It forms an essential part of how we think and who we are.
We wanted to run the Gate because we fell in love with the space, its international outlook, and its history of producing trailblazing, radical theatre. As we lead the company into its 40th Anniversary year, we’re proud to stand on the shoulders of those that have come before us, and to constantly look ahead, challenging the status quo and reimagining what theatre can be.
– Ellen McDougall (Artistic Director) and Lise Bell (Executive Director)
The Gate Theatre was founded in 1979 to present ground-breaking international plays to a London audience.
Today, the Gate exists to make international theatre that asks essential questions about ourselves, each other and the world. Our work investigates what it means to be alive now. We imagine our work as a live conversation with our audience. Everyone is welcome in our intimate 75 seat theatre. Our space transforms with every production – no two visits are ever the same.
We nurture the best and most diverse new talent to push the boundaries of what theatre is and what else it could be. We create space for radical, inventive thinking to surprise, delight, challenge and inspire.
Our mission and our approach to delivering it strives to embody our organisational values of community, diversity, invention, internationalism and sustainability.
