Sonali Bhattacharyya

Sonali is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter whose stageplays include King Troll (The Fawn) (Kali Theatre/New Diorama) – a finalist for the Woman’s Prize for Playwriting and nominated for two OffWestEnd Awards, The Little Mermaid (Bristol Old Vic), Liberation Squares (Fifth Word/Nottingham Playhouse/Brixton House) – nominated for two OffWestEnd Awards, Chasing Hares (Young Vic/Theatre Uncut) – winner of the Theatre Uncut Political Playwriting Award and the Sonia Friedman Production Award and Two Billion Beats (Orange Tree Theatre). Her recent writing for Augmented Reality includes Through the Cracks (English Touring Theatre), starring Sophie Melville and Ian McKellan. She is currently under commission to Manhattan Theatre Club and on the writing team for television drama The Split Up for BBC/Sister Pictures.

She is interested in dramatising the people’s history, putting characters centre stage who have previously been obscured. Sonali believes that stories allow us to imagine different ways of living, and that act of imagination is the first step to changing the world.
