Alice is taking over as Producer.
Born and raised in South East London, Alice is passionate about platforming theatre that speaks to different communities in London. She strives to produce work that is inclusive, accessible and that examines the cross sections between the personal, political, global and local. Before starting at the Gate in March 2022 she was Producer at Cardboard Citizens. She has previously worked with organisations like the National Theatre, Graeae Theatre Company, The Coronet Theatre, Barrowland Ballet and more. Alongside this role, she is the Producer of a small theatre company that works with learning disabled and neurodiverse adults called Square Pegs Arts.
What brought you to producing?
I always knew I wanted to work in theatre but I didn’t fully realise there were careers available to me that weren’t being a creative. It took me one misguided attempt at directing, and a lot of making spreadsheets for my theatre maker friends to realise that I could use my organisation and problem solving to be creative without actually making the shows. My mum was the Artistic Director of a theatre company for learning disabled artists, so growing up theatre felt very accessible and open to me, a space for everyone, but I quickly learnt how elitist and exclusive it could be. So, my drive to produce theatre really comes from a desire to make the industry I loved so much be more like the place I imagined it was as a child.
What made you want to work for the Gate?
I wanted to work for the Gate because it’s an organisation that is so intensely value driven. It’s a space that is on an interesting journey and at a moment of organisational change. It’s incredibly exciting to get to be part of shaping what the Gate is 2022 onwards, post pandemic, with a change of Artistic Director, and getting to be part of the dynamic conversations about everything from the art we produce to the working culture.
What are your top three values?
Kindness. Curiosity. Community.
What do you hope to achieve in your new role?
I want to be a part of developing sustained relationships with the communities around our theatre and supporting the careers of incredible emerging artists.
What’s a show you’ll never forget?
Emilia, by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm @ Shakespeare’s Globe. I dragged myself out on with a horrible cold on its closing night to stand in the rain and watch it, and by the closing speech I felt electric, raging at the world in the best way possible.
