Since 2001, The Jerwood Designers Programme has given outstanding designers the unique opportunity to design a full production at the Gate Theatre. By the end of the 2018/19 programme, Jerwood Arts will have supported 96 placements on the Designers Programme over the course of 17 years. In 2014 the Programme was extended to not only support three designers a year at the Gate, but also three Design Assistants right at the very start of their careers, enabling us to provide a rare pathway for emerging designers to build expertise and experience.
This partnership is an essential part of the Gate’s identity as a theatre – enabling us to offer designers the opportunity to completely re-imagine how our space is configured for every show. It also provides a hugely respected showcase for their work – alumni of the programme include Chloe Lamford, Jon Bausor, Fly Davis, Soutra Gilmour, Tom Scutt and Rosie Elnile, who between them have gone on to design for stages at the National Theatre, the Royal Court and the MTV Awards in LA.
If you’ve worked on a show with us you are an Alumni Artist. At the end of every season, we hold an Artists’ Dinner for Alumni Assistant Directors and Design Assistants – it’s a chance to catch up, build relationships and discuss projects. We also share scripts we love, and welcome anyone who wants to read for us more regularly. Whenever we can, we let our Alumni Artists use our theatre space or office to develop any projects they are working on.

Whether you’re a designer, director, playwright or actor, please feel free to invite us to see your work. We are a busy producing office, but we try to see as much work as we possibly can.
We do prioritise work that has an affinity or relationship with our focus as an organisation – check out our About Us page to find out a bit more. Please include information in your invitation explaining why you want us to come and see the work you are making.
We are particularly interested in seeing work from diverse, international backgrounds, and work that is formally inventive.
Please give us 6 weeks’ notice if you possibly can, to give us the best chance of having someone from our team available to come along.
Please send your invites to Valerie@gatetheatre.co.uk
Unfortunately, we don’t currently have the capacity to read unsolicited scripts, and our programme prioritises stories from international artists who are based outside the UK.
If you are interested in getting to know us and our work, have a look at our pages – we run workshops alongside every show for emerging artists in all sorts of theatre-making disciplines, and our Young People’s Nights include a post-show talk with the artists who made the shows.
