Adaptation and Translation with Christina MacSweeney & Maria Jose Andrade

Join Christina MacSweeney, translator of Valeria Luiselli’s award-winning novel Faces In The Crowd and Maria Jose Andrade, Assistant Director on the Gate Theatre’s adaptation of the novel, to explore processes of translation and adaptation, and how text and theatre can cross borders. Christina and Maria Jose will demystify the processes behind their work in a live conversation with the audience.

Christina MacSweeney – Translator
Christina MacSweeney has an MA in Literary Translation from the University of East Anglia and specialises in Latin American fiction. Her translations have previously appeared in a variety of online sites and literary magazines. She has also translated Valeria Luiselli’s volume of essays, Sidewalks.

Maria Jose – Assistant Director
María José is a London-based Chilean director and producer. She is the artistic director of the Chilean-British theatre collective The Last Company Theatre. Her work moves across theatre, performance, poetry and moving image; It is moved by an interest in cross-disciplinary and collaborative working processes, with a strong focus in critical cultural discourses. As a creative producer, María José has initiated and developed various international projects that connect and re-imagine the possible connections between Latin-American artists with European Institutions.
