1600 Deaths in Custody: What about Police Brutality in the UK?
Following In Conversation: David Lammy, the Gate continues to explore the themes in Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. Siana Bangura, producer of the upcoming documentary 1500 & Counting and award winning writer, leads a free public workshop about police brutality in the UK.
According to Inquest, there have been over 1600 deaths in police custody or otherwise following contact with the police in England & Wales since 1990, and BAME people have been disproportionately affected. With Black Lives Matter and high profile events in the US resounding across the globe, this workshop asks: what about the UK?
This event is for those who want to find out more about police brutality or deaths in custody and talk more about this in a UK context. It is open to everyone, even if you haven’t seen Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. The event is free but ticketed.
