Since 2001, The Jerwood Designers Programme has given outstanding designers the unique opportunity to design a full production at the Gate Theatre, and have now supported 90 placements over the course of 17 years. In 2014 the programme was extended to not only support four Designers a year at the Gate, but three Designers and three Design Assistants right at the very start of their careers, enabling us to provide a rare pathway for emerging designers to build expertise and experience.
This partnership is an essential part of the Gate's identity as a theatre - enabling us to offer designers the opportunity to completely re-imagine how our space is configured for every show. It also provides a hugely respected showcase for their work; alumni of the programme include Chloe Lamford, Jon Bausor, Fly Davis, Soutra Gilmour, Tom Scutt and Rosie Elnile, who between them have gone on to design for stages at the National Theatre, the Royal Court and the MTV Awards in LA
As soon as a pizza delivery scooter crashed through the wall, I was hooked. From there to rural Spain, warzones, ancient Greece…entire worlds reimagined, cross-examined…the Gate demands artists and audiences think bravely, limitlessly.
Jon Opie, Jerwood Charitable Foundation
Groundbreaking and visionary design is a key part of the Gate Theatre's identity. This reputation has been built on the generous and unwavering support of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and we are hugely grateful for it.
