Gate Theatre is excited to present its first ever Black Out performance (Fri 24 Feb, 7.30pm) for the UK premiere of Bootycandy.
What is a Black Out performance?
Black Out is a performance for which all the tickets are reserved for Black audience members. The initiative was originated by American playwright Jeremy O. Harris during the Broadway run of Slave Play in 2019 (directed by Robert O’Hara, playwright of Bootycandy), and then brought to London during the run of his show Daddy at Almeida Theatre.
Why are you doing a Black Out performance?
With the themes, experiences and sensitivities explored in Bootycandy, our creatives believe it is important to provide an opportunity for Black theatregoers to experience sitting in a space where the whole audience looks like them, to come together to witness, celebrate and reflect on this Black, queer story.
How much are the tickets?
We have a range of ticket options from £5 – £18, with concessions available for Unemployed/Unwaged, Camden residents / workers, Access patrons, Under 26s / Students, Over 60s, and Equity members. You can find out more ways to save here.
Can I attend this performance if I’m not Black?
While this Black Out performance and event has been curated specifically for Black audiences, we will not be preventing anyone from attending the performance. We will not be questioning any audience members or turning anyone away. We do however ask that non-black audiences consider attending any of the other 20+ Bootycandy performances, to support our objective to create a space for as many black-identifying audience members as possible.
