We're so excited to announce that Stage Designer Rosie Elnile has been made an Associate Artist here at the Gate. Rosie will join Directors Jude Christian and Anthony Simpson-Pike working alongside the Gate Theatre’s Artistic Director Ellen McDougall. Her role will include supporting the artistic programming and mentoring emerging designers working at the theatre.
Rosie graduated from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama with a BA Hon (First Class) in Design for the Stage. She was the winner of ‘Best Designer’ in the Stage Debut Awards 2017.
Rosie recent productions include Three Sisters by Rash Dash after Chekov at the Manchester Royal Exchange and Yard Theatre, London; Returning to Haifa (The Finborough); The Unknown Island and The Convert (both at the Gate Theatre); Goats and Primetime (Royal Court); BIG GUNS (Yard); Hard C*ck (Spill festival) and Loaded (Jacksons Lane). Later this year she is designing The Wolves at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East with Ellen McDougall.
Ellen McDougall said:
'Rosie is an incredible designer and thinker. We have had so many brilliant conversations about design, artists, power structures and aesthetics, diversity and sustainability since we met working on The Unknown Island, when she was the Jerwood Designer here at the Gate.
She will be an incredible asset to our team here – the position will enable her to mentor the designers making work here for the first time, and to help us collate an accessible archive of the history of incredible design that has happened in our space – as a source of inspiration for the future. Her role in the team will also enable us to deepen our thinking about how we make work. We are really proud to showcase the work of the most exciting designers here at the Gate, and are able to do so with the integral and brilliant support of the Jerwood Designers Programme which has been running here for 17 years.'
Designers at the Gate Theatre are supported by the Jerwood Designers Programme which has run at the theatre since 2001. The programme supports 3 designers per year, and a design assistant on each production.
Next year, Associate Director Anthony Simpson-Pike will be directing The Ridiculous Darkness at the Gate and Jude Christian recently directed Trust here. We're thrilled to work with these amazing artists and can't wait to see what the next year brings.
