“One of the thrills of a Gate production is the endless inventiveness applied to a tiny space: you never know what will greet you as you walk through the door.” - The Metro

Established in 1979 above the Prince Albert Pub, Notting Hill, the Gate Theatre continues to present the best in international drama. Small and ambitious, the Gate has challenged and inspired directors and designers, making it famous for being one of the most flexible and transformable spaces in London.

Stephen Daldry made his mark as Artistic Director of the Gate in the early 90s, bringing casts as large as 20 into our tiny auditorium. The Gate has recently seen a renaissance of large casts in sell-out productions such as Hair and The Emperor Jones, which both had to be extended due to their success. As an artistically led theatre, we have never let financial limitations deter us from our creative ambitions. With an average of a mere 70 seats, we cannot be supported solely by ticket revenue, and whilst being a regularly funded organisation by Arts Council England, the Gate continues to rely on individual support in order to survive.

In April 2003, following a groundbreaking agreement with Arts Council England and British Equity, we were able to pay actors and stage managers a small but regular wage for the first time in Gate history. Since then, the weekly wage has increased by £50 per year, and today our fundraising target is at an unprecedented high and rising. The bar continues to be raised as we aim to reach industry standard rates by April 2008.

We hope you will join us at this exhilarating point in our history.
