I'll Take You There
Feb-April 2010
During this community performance project, local young people will reimagine their environment and, at the end of the project, take their audience to unexpected places and spaces.
Building on the success of the Down My Street project (summer 2009) and our relationship with St Clement and St James Centre, who deliver a rounded programme of educational and pastoral support to local young people, the first week of the I’ll Take You There project took place in February half term. The group will meet again in their Easter holidays to complete their devised piece of theatre, based on their local environment and stories, culminating in a performance in the centre’s courtyard at the end of the project. The group are working with director Nicholai La Barrie and a choreographer/movement director Temitope Ajose-Cutting (recently performed in Breathing Irregular at the Gate Theatre).
The group is made up of 14 young people, between 13-15 years old. They are taking part in the I’ll Take You There project as part of a wider week of work for the IntoUniversity scheme – a hugely successful project which gives young people from one of K&C’s most deprived areas the opportunity to find out more about university life.
Some of their feedback from the initial stage of the project includes:
• The thing I will take away with me is storytelling and using other people’s ideas to come up with a great story – Kelly
• One thing I want to take away with me would be developing the storytelling so my imagination will expand – Ashleigh
• I hope to take forward in April the amount of confidence I’ve gained from these afternoon sessions – Ashanti
• The thing I enjoyed were the pieces we had to create as individuals but working as an ensemble at the end – Kyran
• The reason why I came here is so I can have fun and stay away from the streets – Zora
