DOWN MY STREET
In summer 2009 The Gate led a site specific participation project with young people at the St Clement and St James community centre in North Kensington. The centre works with a diverse range of young people from the local community, and has developed their highly successful Into University scheme which helps underprivileged young people get access to support to realise their full potential.
DOWN MY STREET was a week long collaboration which explored site specific performance in the streets around north Kensington. The young people participated in drama, mapping and free running workshops, developing their creative and collaborative skills, and the week ended in a sharing of “Shania’s Story”, devised and performed by the group and performed in the streets around the St Clement and St James Centre.
Participants’ comments
“Fun, wild, great, very different”
“Good fun as it gave us a chance to use our imagination and made us take more notice of the environment around us”
“I enjoyed it as it gave me the chance to express myself in drama!”
We hope to develop the project into a major community play next summer. If you live in Kensington and Chelsea and would like to take part, please contact Rebecca McCutcheon at participate@gatetheatre.co.uk
